'Star Wars' reveals the afterlife of the Jedi for the first time
Mar 21, 2026After years of secrecy,Star Warshas finally revealed official images of the Underworld, also known as the universe's afterlife or the place where Force ghosts reside.
Starting with the filmThe Empire Strikes Back, fans of the franchise were familiar with Force ghosts and knew that the spirit of a Jedi does not disappear after the death of his physical body. InRevenge of the SithYoda mentioned the Netherworld, indicating that this is where the souls of the Jedi go.
The recently released canonical comic Legacy of Vader #10 finally showed what the afterlife looks like. She's been talked about in dialogue over the years, but this is the first time she's been shown in such detail.

The comic tells the story of Kylo Ren's journey to the Netherworld of the Force and his interaction with the ghost of Luke Skywalker. Because this story introduces Luke as a Force ghost since it takes place afterThe Last Jedi.
The comic is essentially about Kylo Ren's search for answers about Darth Vader, as well as how to get rid of Skywalker, who always seems to occupy his conscience. To do this, he visits Vader's castle on Mustafar and finds himself in several other worlds.

On one of the panels behind Luke, three more blue silhouettes are visible. The comic doesn't confirm who they are, but Luke states that he "comes from a long line of teachers." The three ghosts are likely Yoda, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Qui-Gon Jinn.

The comic doesn't spend much time detailing the underworld ofStar Wars. It is confirmed that this is, in fact, a place of eternal light. The surrounding area has physical formations of rocks and mountains, but they all have a blue tint, like the Force ghosts.
Explaining the Underworld (Heaven) and Chaos (Hell) in Star Wars

At its core, the concept of an afterlife in the franchise is extremely similar to the afterlife that most believers believe in. For example, the Hell of Power is a representation of Heaven, as it is a place of eternal peace and light. There is a common misconception that only Jedi can enter the Underworld, but this is not true.
Like Christianity,Star Warsalso has its own version of Hell, which is called Chaos. Also known as the Void, it is the unpleasant realm of the afterlife. It is described as an abyss guarded by six impenetrable gates.
Chaos is talked about much less than the Underworld, but it exists. Characters even use the word "Hell" in canon projects. For example, inThe Empire Strikes BackHan Solo says, “Then I’ll see you in Hell.”
Star Warsdoes not explicitly say how it is decided which creatures are sent to the Underworld and which are banished to Chaos. This may be based on actions during life.
