From spider legs to Nightsister magic, Maul's many mechanical limbs

Mar 16, 2026

The galaxy can be a dangerous place, where lightsaber duels, blaster shots and dangerous creatures are commonplace. Losing a limb is a high risk for any galactic citizen (just remember how many characters have lost an arm, including Luke Skywalker!).

What about Mol? His life of crime led him to create and reassemble his cybernetic prosthetics more than once. Ahead of his triumphant return in the upcoming animated series Star Wars: Maul - Shadow Lordpremiering on Disney+ April 6, 2026 (two episodes), let's take a closer look at how the former Lord href="https://www.starwars.com/databank/sith">Sith found himself in this situation, step by step.

Maybe he was born this way?

In the film “Star Wars: The Phantom Menace”wemeet Maul for the first time during his apprenticeship. Known at the time as Darth Maul, he served under Darth Sidious (Sheev Palpatine's secret alter ego) as a deadly, highly skilled Sith warrior. Sent to kill Queen Amidala, Maul arrived at Naboo where he encountered the Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn and his padawanObi-Wan Kenobi.

Maul managed to defeat Qui-Gon thanks to his impressive agility. But although he put up a worthy fight against an enraged Obi-Wan, Maul was ultimately defeated by the apprentice when he was cut in half and thrown into a garbage chute.

Rescued spider legs

Long presumed dead after being dissected on Naboo, Maul survived his life-threatening wound by turning to the dark side and focusing on his hatred of Obi-Wan. In the episode "Brothers" of the series Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Darth Maul's brother, Savage Opress, discovered Maul on Lotho Minor about 10 years after that fateful fight.

Ever since Maul found refuge on the junk planet, he has gone mad, tossing between meaningless ravings and insane laughter. Maul's first prosthetics were eerily reminiscent of giant spider legs and were very crudely made. Mostly made from materials found in the debris around him, these numerous mechanical limbs reflected just how insane Maul's life and mind had become. However, they were functional and so iconic that even Darth Jar Jar paid homage to the spider legs in the set LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy - Pieces of the Past.

Clawed Feet of Dark Magic

Thanks to Savage, the brothers returned to their home planet Dathomir in the episode "Revenge" of the series "Star Wars: Wars clones.”An enraged and distraught Maul was rescued by the Night Sisters, a mysterious coven of witches who wield dark magic. The matriarch of the Nightsisters, Mother Talzin, lured Maul to a stone altar, where she dismembered him in order to restore the son of Dathomir mentally, physically and spiritually.

His spider legs were replaced by two new, reforged legs, created using magic and recycled droid components - a truly wild combination. They first appeared in the 2005 anthology graphic novelStar Wars: Visionariesby concept artist Aaron McBride and featured claw-like grips at the bottom.

Humanoid legs from The Mandalorian

The list of Maul's cybernetic prostheses is replenished with three pairs. He received his last set of legs in the episode "Greatness " of the series "Star Wars: The Clone Wars." After a catastrophic clash between pirates and Jedi on Florrum Darth Maul and Savage Opress were saved on the escape pod, but Maul's legs were damaged in the fight. They found themselves in outer space unconscious and on the verge of death. Fortunately for Maul and unfortunately for the future of Mandalore, he was saved by Death Watch, a splinter cell from the Mandalorians led by Pre Vizsla.

Pre Vizsla brought Maul and his brother back to the Death Guard camp, where they received medical attention and, you guessed it, Maul received brand new legs.Maul woke up with Mandalorian-grade humanoid prosthetics. And, as far as we know, this pair of legs served him long after the end of the Clone Wars, until the early years of the Empire, which begins Star Wars: Maul - Lord of Shadows.

How far will Maul's thirst for revenge (and his shiny Mandalorian legs) go? Find out whenStar Wars: Maul – Lord of Shadowsis released on Disney+ on April 6, 2026.
