Darth Maul's brother will influence the events of the new Star Wars series

Darth Maul's brother, Savage Opress, died during the Clone Wars. However, he will have a non-obvious role inStar Wars: Maul - Shadow Lord(Star Wars: Maul - Shadow Lord).

After Maul was cut in half inThe Phantom Menace, he was revealed to have survived and teamed up with his brother. Savage's life was cut short after Darth Sidious killed him in front of his brother. Chronologically,Shadowlordtakes place one year after the Clone Wars, as a former Sith attempts to rebuild a criminal empire in a galaxy now under Imperial control.

In an interview with Star Wars Insider, Maul's voice actor Sam Witwer said that Savage puts a lot of pressure on the character. The villain even realizes that he failed his brother.

He examines himself and reflects on his brother, Savage Opress, his first student and family. Did he treat him as well as he should have, given Savage's loyalty? No. But now he finally appreciates it and realizes: “I failed him.”

How Savage is connected to the new story

AlthoughShadowlorddoesn't resurrect Savage, Witwer's comments confirm his influence on the plot. Looking back at Savage and the mistakes made against him, Maul will make decisions based on that. Most likely, this is somehow connected with the character’s new student.

Of course, there is always the possibility that Savage will appear in a flashback. He might even be voiced by Clancy Brown again. However, Witwer's comments indicate that the character's role will have more to do with how the memories of him affect Maul.

The 10-episode animated series will premiere on April 6 on Disney+.
