Who is the most powerful Jedi in Star Wars: Canon vs Legends

Feb 13, 2026

Star Warsfans have been arguing for years about who is the strongest Jedi. But in reality there is no competition.

After the release of Return of the Jedi in 1983, it became abundantly clear to fans that Luke Skywalker was the strongest Jedi of all time. He defeated the Sith and accomplished what no other Jedi could do. However, the prequel trilogy showed how powerful his father, Anakin, was.

If we consider only canon and all references, then Anakin Skywalker is by far the most powerful Jedi. However, if we consider the expanded universe, then, undoubtedly, it is Luke.

Both characters have demonstrated their immense power throughout canon, and it's no secret that they are extremely gifted. However, Anakin should be favored in canon for several reasons.

Why Anakin is the strongest Jedi in canon

As far as canon goes, Anakin is the strongest Jedi of all time, and that's not even up for debate. Luke's powers afterReturn of the Jediwere briefly shown inThe MandalorianandThe Book of Boba Fett. The most obvious demonstration of Luke's power is probably the Force projection inThe Last Jedi, but Anakin surpassed it inThe Clone Wars.

While Anakin, Ahsoka and Obi-Wan were on Mortis, Skywalker was able to simultaneously control the Son and Daughter. The One (Father, Son and Daughter) were the true embodiments of the Force itself, so Anakin's ability to control both the Light and Dark sides of the Force proved his incredible strength.

This also proved to Father Mortis that Anakin was truly the Chosen One. However, the status of the Chosen One does not guarantee absolute power without realizing the potential. But Anakin was born through the Force. He had no father and his midichlorian levels were the highest ever recorded.Even if fans still haven't come to terms with George Lucas's introduction of this element.

Midi-chlorians do not necessarily reflect a person's strength, but they do indicate their potential. Thus, scientifically speaking, in the world ofStar WarsAnakin had the potential to become the most powerful Force user in history.

How Luke became the strongest Jedi in Legends

After the release of Return of the Jedi, new stories based on Star Wars began to appear. All of these stories made up what became known as the Expanded Universe, and in some of them, Luke literally had the power of a god.

In the novel seriesThe New Jedi Order, while fighting the Yuuzhan Vong who invaded the galaxy, Luke literally manipulated and moved the singularity. This completely exhausted the hero, but he still moved something that does not even obey the natural laws of physics.

Many fans of Star Wars have probably heard of Abeloth. It is an incredibly powerful being, associated with the gods of Mortis, and is essentially invincible. InFate of the JediLuke battles Abeloth in another dimension called Beyond the Shadows.

To get to Beyond the Shadows, Luke had to separate from his physical body, which in itself requires strength. While there, he fought with Darth Krayt and defeated Abeloth.

Another example of Luke's power in Legends is Swarm Warfare. Skywalker used the Force to ground himself, becoming literally motionless. It is noted that Luke was so motionless that even a black hole could not move him.

So the general consensus is clear: in canon, Anakin Skywalker is the most powerful Jedi. However, within the framework of Legends, his son surpasses him.
