Since Luke Skywalker first ignited his father's lightsaber in Star Wars: A New Hope nearly 50 years ago, the elegant weapons of the Jedi and Sith have become a fascinating part of the galaxy. Characters such as Anakin Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Emperor Palpatine and Darth Maul, among many others, have used their lightsabers to both protect the world and contribute to the downfall of the galaxy in equal measure.
Sparks fly in lightsaber battles. Let's take a look back at some of our favorite fights in a galaxy far, far away.
Luke Skywalker vs.DarthVader(Star Wars: Empire strikesretaliatorystrike )
The confrontation between Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader in The Empire Strikes Back is truly one of the original and iconic lightsaber battles. The action takes place in the depths of Cloud City, and the battle between Luke and Vader begins in the carbonite chamber where Han Solo was frozen. The bright blue light and rising steam set the scene for the long-awaited showdown between Luke and the man who was about to appear - spoiler alert! - his father. Luke holds his own, using his limited training and skillful use of the environment, in a tense and exciting fight that you won't want to take your eyes off. But in the end Vader gains the upper hand. Literally.The battle ends with Luke losing a limb, hanging over a deep chasm, and Darth Vader revealing a dark family secret.
Anakin Skywalker vs.BarrissOffie(Star Wars: The Clone Wars-Season 5, Episode 20,«The WrongJedi)
Ahsoka Tano is expelled from the Jedi Order and faces a military tribunal for alleged crimes, including the bombing of the Jedi Temple. This doesn't sit well with Anakin Skywalker - or any of us! He immediately suspects that his Padawan has been framed and sets out in search of the truth. His clues eventually lead him to Barriss Offee, the real mastermind of the bombing and a Jedi Padawan herself. When he confronts Barriss, the Jedi Temple becomes an interesting setting for a fast-paced showdown, with both Jedi, in classic Skywalker style, jumping out of a window into the courtyard. We see firsthand how cruel Anakin can be as he fights those who have wronged those he cares about.Barriss puts up a decent fight, but she is no match for Anakin's abilities.

In an alternate galaxy, the Empire created twins Ama and Carre using the power of the dark side of the Force. Each twin has incredible skills and was raised to bring order to the galaxy. But Carre is ready for an uprising. The ensuing battle includes an amazing display of Force powers and violent lightsaber clashes between Am and Karre in bombastic anime style - including an empowered Karre using his lightsaber to cut through the hull of a Star Destroyer and simultaneously defeat and save his sister. Ama's enhancement with Kyber Crystal and the fact that the fight takes place aboard starships make for a truly creative lightsaber duel.
Ahsoka vs.Baylan Skoll (Ahsoka - Season 1, Episode 4,Fallen Jedi)
Ahsoka Tano's journey to find the map that will lead her and Sabine Wren to Grand Admiral Thrawn and Ezra Bridger put her on a dangerous path.She bravely faces off against foes such as Inquisitor Marrok and Shin Hati who haunt her in the first season of Ahsoka. But Ahsoka's battle with ex-Jedi-turned-mercenary Baylan Skoll keeps us on the edge of our seats. They eye each other before their lightsabers even touch, creating a slowly building tension that sets the stage for the duel that unfolds. Ahsoka's agility holds up well against Baylan's brute strength, but it's not enough. The battle ends with Ahsoka wounded, losing concentration, and falling off a cliff.
Qui-Gon Jinnand Obi-Wan Kenobi vs. Darth Maul (Star Wars: The Hidden threat)
Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi are pursued from Tatooine all the way to Naboo by the fearsome Darth Maul. Unable to escape, the Jedi at the royal palace send the retinue of Padme Amidala ahead to deal with Maul alone. To the music of John Williams's "Duel of the Fates", the battle unfolds rapidly: the three fight on many bridges and obstacles. Maul is agile and ferocious, using his double-bladed lightsaber effectively. And although Qui-Gon is able to hold his own in combat for a while, Maul ultimately wins. This final blow has us screaming "No!" along with Obi-Wan Kenobi every time we watch the movie. But this is not the end of the fight.And perhaps fueled by anger after his crushing defeat, Obi-Wan engages Maul and ends the battle (for now) by cutting him in half.

Kanan Jarrus and Ezra Bridger vs. Darth Vader (Star Wars Rebels - Season 2, Episode 1"The Siege ofLothal")
Just as they board the shuttle to escape Lothal, Ezra Bridger and Kanan Jarrus must battle Darth Vader. Ezra only trains as a Padawan for only a short time, but he and Kanan still put up a worthy resistance to the Sith Lord - despite the fact that they are significantly inferior to him in strength. As Kanan and Ezra work together to contain Vader, this duel shows how far their relationship as students and teachers has come since they had trouble finding common ground! But they manage to escape successfully only thanks to the help of their friends Sabine Wren and Zeb Orrelios. As Kanan says, they were lucky to survive this exciting battle.
Ronin and Anee-san vs. the Grand Master (Star Wars: Visions"Duel: Reckoning")
Ronin returns, and this time he's hunting a Sith. When he first meets Anei-san, they fight each other in the cramped confines of an AT-AT walker that has been turned into a gambling den.But the dramatic appearance of the Grand Master, a vengeful Jedi whom Ronin has previously faced, forces enemies to join forces to take on a new foe in a thrilling lightsaber duel that ultimately ends in the Grand Master's defeat, made all the more impressive by the highly stylized animation and vibrant color palette. Who said two former opponents can't make a good team?
Obi-Wan Kenobi vs Darth Vader (Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi - Season 1, Episode 6"Part VI")
Anticipation for Obi-Wan Kenobi's story to continue in his own series was incredibly high - especially after the fight in Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith that left Anakin scarred and changed the galaxy forever. As we hoped, Obi-Wan and Anakin's reunion in the miniseries was the climactic showdown. They waste no time. Trading blows, they show off their skills in all their glory - including classic Obi-Wan spin moves. The complicated feelings the former friends have for each other are palpable when Obi-Wan apologizes to Anakin. But the fierce battle ends with Obi-Wan again leaving Darth Vader.Anakin Skywalker is truly dead.

As Finn and Rey emerge from the destroyed Starkiller Base, Kylo Ren stalks them like a predator hunting its prey in the forest. Our heroes have no formal training, but they do their best to fight off Ren against the backdrop of the beauty of a snowy forest as the ground begins to crack around them. Honorable Mention: Darth Vader vs.Rebels ("Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" war").
It's not really a lightsaber battle if your opponent is using a blaster. But certainly the unfair lightsaber fight between Darth Vader and some brave rebels at the end of Rogue One still deserves a place on our list.After the destruction on Scarif, Darth Vader appears, pursuing Death Star Plans through a dark corridor, illuminating the path with the light of his red sword. Displaying brute force and sparing no one, this battle reminds us why Vader is such a terrifying figure in the entire galaxy, no matter who he fights.
