New information has confirmed that Darth Plagueis was set to be a villain in the canceledStar Wars seriesduring the Rise of the Republic.

In July 2024, shortly after the end of the first season ofAcolyte(Acolyte), Lucasfilm officially announced the cancellation of the series. The creators were counting on at least one more season, as was hinted at by the ending of the first. This left fans with many questions, including: Who was the Stranger? Why did Yoda appear in the finale? And was it really Darth Plagueis in the cave?

As part of the new art book Art of Star Wars: The Acolyte, series creator Leslye Headland has lifted the veil of secrecy on some key details of the canceled show. According to TheDirect, she confirmed plans for Darth Plagueis:

I always wanted Plagueis to show up at the end of the season. His appearance in the middle would seem too difficult. So we decided to introduce the era, the main characters, and the storyline first, and then introduce Plagueis as a bigger threat.

Although many have speculated that the mystery character is Plagueis, this has never been directly confirmed over the eight episodes ofThe Acolyte.

Will Darth Plagueis be featured again in Star Wars?

Darth Plagueis has become one of the most legendary characters in the franchise, never properly seen on screen within the canon. He was first mentioned by Palpatine in the movieStar Wars: Revenge of the Sithin a conversation with Anakin Skywalker.

At this point, the only credible introduction of the character was a “cameo” in the finale of Acolyte. Given the cancellation of the project, this version of the villain will most likely not appear in films again.

However, this does not mean that fans will never see Plagueis. Now he's finally been shown in canon, so there's nothing stopping him from bringing him back in the future. Lucasfilm certainly has an idea of how to develop the character in one form or another.
