Surprise new Star Wars short film coming out just in time for Christmas
Dec 23, 2025A surprise from Lucasfilm and Industrial Light & Magic will arrive just in time for Christmas this year.

On December 23, Star Wars Kids will release a new short film, The Gingerbread Death Star Trench Run, in which the iconic trench flying scene from A New Hope is reimagined and recreated entirely from gingerbread cookies.
The film was co-created by ILM artist Landis Fields, who used his love of reality baking shows to create this short film. “We collect a lot of reference material and use devices to capture things in 3D, and then we bring it into the computer to compare it to what we create,” Fields told StarWars.com. “It adds an extra layer of verisimilitude, charm and magic.”
But that's not all...

An article on StarWars.com implies that "The Gingerbread Death Star Trench Run" is part of a new series of animated shorts called "Star Wars Minis". One of these shorts appears to feature a chibi-style Japanese C-3PO (as shown in the picture above).
The behind-the-scenes video, which will be released tomorrow along with the short film, offers a look at another new Star Wars Mini, which reimagines the adventure of The Mandalorian and Grogu, made entirely from yarn. The behind-the-scenes image below shows an ILM creative using real-time tools to move a virtual camera around Mando's cabin.

“Regardless of the style, we always wanted them to feel small,” Fields said.“So whether it's gingerbread, knitted dolls or even Japanese chibi style, they look like toys that children play with.”
