Why Luke Skywalker died in Star Wars: The Last Jedi Revealed
Nov 13, 2025The canonical comic book Star Wars: Legacy of Vader added meaning to a scene from the film Star Wars: The Last Jedi.
InThe Last JediLuke Skywalker dies in an attempt to apprehend Kylo Ren and allow the Resistance to escape the First Order. This ending for one of the franchise's most beloved characters left some fans unsatisfied.
The Direct took a look at the tenth issue of the comic series Star Wars: Legacy of Vader. In this canonical comic, the reader again sees Luke Skywalker, or rather his spirit, who appeared to his former student Kyle Ren, who is experiencing the consequences after the events of Episode 8.
Kylo Ren did not kill Luke Skywalker

The dialogue between both of them in the comic brings more clarity to Luke's death scene in The Last Jedi. In this conversation, Luke absolves anyone of responsibility for his death and explains that he voluntarily “sacrificed his life for the sake of others”:
Nobody killed me. I sacrificed my life for others, for something greater. I died for my friends and family, for people I don't know across the galaxy, so that they could live in peace and light. This is what my life was for.
As The Direct notes, this comic expansion may not satisfy all fans. But given Mark Hamill's age, Luke Skywalker is unlikely to appear on screen. Even in the Mandoverse, young Luke appears to have ended his journey as Grogu decided to return to Din Djarin.
However, the portal still sees a potential opportunity for Luke to return to the big screen. For example, this could logically happen in a feature-length project with Daisy Ridley, where Luke's Force ghost will guide a new generation. However, according to the latest information, the film about Rey Skywalker has been postponed for now.
